Awards All Round As Sustainable Young Enterprise Team Comes Out On Top

Award-winning students from Young Enterprise Team, GreenFutureSA, receive special awards from Curriculum Leader for Design Technology, Venexia Ashton-Wood, for their performance in the Young Enterprise Competition. They presented her with a bouquet of flowers to thank her for her support throughout the year.

Somercotes Academy’s Young Enterprise Team Green FutureSA won the award for Most Sustainable Company and were voted into second place overall in the North East Lincs Young Enterprise Awards.

The Year 9 and 10 students set up their own eco-friendly enterprise recycling old scaffold boards and plastic into saleable products, such as chopping boards, phone holders, wine and gin boards, and Valentine’s hearts and key rings, making a final profit of £472.

They spent their lunch breaks and evenings coming up with ideas for products, manufacturing them at school in their own time, and selling them online on their instagram page.

They took part in the Young Enterprise Scheme, which teaches young people about life beyond the classroom in a practical environment. By setting up and managing their own business, the students learn about money management, hands-on production skills, and teamwork in a real-life context.

Curriculum Leader for Design Technology, Venexia Ashton-Wood, said the students’ commitment to the project had been ‘tremendous.”

“We hope to take part in Young Enterprise again next year but the students will have to work very hard to beat the enthusiasm and commitment shown by this year’s group,” she said. “They have given this everything and have learned so many important skills along the way. I am incredibly proud of each one of them.”
