These procedures have been drawn up after extensive consultation with parents and includes the latest guidance from the DfE.

Rationale

The purpose of these procedures is to ensure that the aims of each academy, outlined in their MISSION STATEMENT, are achievable. In particular it ensures that:

"we will create opportunities for every individual in the Academy Community to develop her/his maximum potential"

Procedure Structure

Nine individual but interlinked elements constitute the Behaviour Policy. These are:

  • The Academy's Code of Conduct
  • The Regulations for Students
  • The Academy Dress Policy
  • The Positive Reward System
  • The Disciplinary Procedures
  • The Anti-Bullying Policy
  • The Drugs Education Policy
  • The Care, Control and Restraint Policy
  • DfE Guidance 'Ensuring Good Behaviour in Schools'

The Code of Conduct

We are proud of the academies and the high standards we set. All our students are expected to share in the responsibility for making each academy successful by observing the Code of Conduct for students.

Students at each Academy are always:

  • Polite and Courteous.
  • Smartly dressed in our uniform.
  • Respectful of others.
  • Hardworking in all they do.
  • Careful to look after their own and others' property.
  • Well behaved in and out of lessons.
  • Supportive of the Academy's high standards and reputation.
  • Supportive of the Academy's Behaviour Policy.
  • Good ambassadors for the Academy.

Regulations for Students

These regulations cover seven main areas:

1. Classroom expectations.
2. Where to go before lessons, at break and at lunchtime.
3. What to do if you are ill/late/have been absent/need to leave for a medical appointment during the day.
4. Looking after your property.
5. Looking after Academy property.
6. Items which should not be brought into the Academy.
7. Homework diaries/planners.

1. Classroom Expectations

Classrooms (including laboratories, workshops and gyms) are your places of work. Just as in any factory or office, there needs to be clearly understood rules and expectations to allow everyone to work successfully, safely and enjoyably.

a) Start of Lessons

  • Follow the instructions about specific rooms: e.g., you should not go into a laboratory or workshop unless a member of staff is present.
  • Enter rooms sensibly and go straight to your workplace.
  • Take out books, planner, pens and equipment.
  • Put bags away (not on desks).
  • Remain silent during the register (except when your name is called!).

b) During Lessons

  • When your teacher talks to the whole class, remain silent and concentrate.
  • If the class is asked a question, put up your hand to answer: do not call out (unless you are asked for quick ideas).
  • You must have the necessary equipment for the subject, planner and any books or folders needed.
  • If you arrive late without justifiable cause you can expect to be detained for the amount of time you missed in order to make up the work. In any event, a brief apology should be offered.
  • Homework must be recorded in your diary/planner.

c) End of Lessons

  • The bell is not a signal for you, it is for the information of your teacher.
  • You should not begin to pack away until your teacher tells you to do so.
  • Only when your teacher finally tells you to go, may you leave the room.

2. Where to go before lessons start, at Break and Lunchtime

  • Students must stay outdoors or in the canteen before the start of lessons, during break and in the lunch period, unless their Head of House has given them permission to be indoors. They should not normally be in the buildings before 8:50am, but if the weather is bad, Heads of House may allow them to come in earlier and use the designated areas.
  • Students in Years 7 – 11 inclusive must not leave the Academy grounds during break or lunch time except with permission from their Heads of House.

3. If you are ill/late/have been absent/need to leave during the day

  • If you feel ill during the day you should inform a member of staff. During the lesson this would be your subject teacher; at break or lunch time you should find the member of staff on duty, or your Head of House. If necessary, a member of Senior Leadership will contact your parents and arrange for them to collect you. No-one should leave the Academy unless this has been authorised.
  • If you are late you must enter your name in the book which is at the Student Office. You should enter your name, House Group, time of arrival and reason for lateness. If you do not sign in you will be marked absent.
  • If you have been absent, you should bring a note for your House Tutor, signed by your parent, on your return. This note is needed even when someone in your family has phoned the Academy during your absence. If your illness lasts for three days or more, your parents will be advised to provide medical evidence to confirm the illness. Failure to provide medical evidence and a note explaining absence can result in unauthorised marks. You must bring a note within 7 days of your return to the Academy.
  • If you have a medical or dental appointment during the day you should bring in your appointment card and a letter from your parent explaining why you need to go out. You should show this to your House Tutor at registration and to the member of staff whose class you are leaving. Before you leave the Academy, report to the Student Office and enter your name in the book and the time you left. When you return to the Academy after treatment, students must sign back in using the book at the pupil office and record the time.

4. Looking after your Property

  • All your property should be named.
  • If you do lose anything, report the loss to your House Tutor or Head of House who will try to help you find it.

5. Looking after Academy Property

  • Equipment provided by the Academy must be used sensibly and carefully so that it is available later for use by other students.
  • If you see that any Academy property has been damaged please report it immediately to a member of staff. If you accidentally cause any damage, please report it immediately to your House Tutor or Head of House.
  • Look after Academy textbooks, files and exercise books; these should not be defaced in any way. If you ruin any book you will be liable to pay for its replacement.

6. Items which should not be brought into the Academy

  • Clothing – only Academy uniform is allowed. No jewellery or make-up is allowed. (For exceptions see 'Academy Dress Policy').
  • Dangerous articles and substances are forbidden for all students, i.e., matches, hair gel, aerosols, cigarettes, alcohol, e-cigarettes, energy drinks, fireworks, knives, drugs, or any other article or substance deemed dangerous by the Academy.
  • The following are also not allowed in the Academy: chewing gum, bottles of liquid paper (forbidden also by the Examining Boards, and is a poison), inappropriate magazines, personal stereos, radios, mobile phones, or any other similar electronic devices – these will be confiscated.

7. Completion of Homework Diaries/Planners

  • You must complete your homework diary/planner on a daily basis.
  • Parents must sign to say they have checked the diary/planner.
  • The diary/planner should be available at all times for a teacher, usually House Tutor, to check.
  • If the homework diary/planner is lost then a replacement must be bought from the Academy.
  • You are responsible for your diary/planner.

Finally, but most importantly:

Teachers are in the position of parents/carers while you are in the Academy. This means in particular that:

  • There is no excuse for rudeness, disrespect or insolence towards teachers.
  • Any reasonable request from a teacher should be carried out at once and without argument.
  • Breaking either of these basic rules will be treated as a VERY serious matter.

ACADEMY DRESS POLICY

ACADEMY UNIFORM (Somercotes Academy)

All students in Years 7-11 are expected to abide by the Academy Dress Policy.

To maintain quality, standards and value for money, Academy blazers and ties are only available from Uniform Direct. A suitable outdoor coat and scarf/hat/gloves may be worn as prevailing weather demands. We recommend that students wear a reflective band in the winter months.

LOWER SCHOOL (Years 7 and 8 only)

1. Girls – Compulsory

Black blazer with Academy badge and green lining.
Black smart tailored trousers (NOT tightly fitted to the leg or cropped to the ankle).
Plain white traditional shirt (not fitted) with top button fastened.
Academy tie (green)
Plain black (no badge) fine-knit v-neck jumper (optional but must be worn under blazer).
Plain white or black socks.
Black, flat shoes (maximum heel height 6cm at the back). Please note that trainers, trainer style shoes, canvas shoes or boots are NOT acceptable.

2. Boys – Compulsory

Black blazer with Academy badge and green lining.

UPPER SCHOOL (Years 9, 10 and 11 only)

Students can continue to wear lower school uniform but once they move into Upper School when a new blazer is required they must purchase an Upper School blazer and tie.

The following are NOT allowed at all in an academy:

  • Coats with offensive logos/badges or snowboarding coats with eye windows.
  • Denim or leather/leather look or knitted coats/jackets.
  • Coloured T-shirts or bras or T-shirts with logos under an Academy shirt (if a T-shirt is worn under a shirt it must be plain).
  • Sweatshirts/jumpers which are not Academy uniform.
  • Sweatshirts/hoodies/zipped jumpers/cardigans/clothing made of sweatshirt material (with or without hoods), are not considered as coats and may not be worn.
  • 'Sports' type jackets/coats.
  • Jeans or jeans-type trousers.
  • Boots of any kind, sandals, canvas shoes, trainers (except for P.E.), trainer shoes.
  • Nail varnish, gel nails, false nails, tattoos, temporary tattoos or make-up (discreet make-up is allowed in Year 11).
  • Jewellery (except for wristwatches). Earrings - only one small stud per ear. Please note that 'smart' watches are not permitted in the Academy. Where ears have been pierced – all jewellery must be removed for P.E. activities.
  • Nose/eyebrow/tongue or any other form of body piercing.
  • Hairstyles which are extreme (NO vivid or two-tone hair colours, NO cuts shorter than a number 1 razor setting, NO patterns cut into hair, NO beaded braids or braids with cotton/material weaves, NO extensions which do not match natural hair colour. For girls, a normal plain hair-slide, clip or "bobble" is acceptable, but the multitude of hair ornaments favoured by some girls is not. No bandanas or scarves are to be worn in the hair.
  • Any hairstyles that have a change in hair length must be blended. Hairstyles must be graduated with no 'stepped' patterns or lines.
  • Mohican hairstyles are not acceptable. This includes stepped haircuts similar to the different styles of Mohican haircuts.
  • Beards or moustaches, or sideburns below the earlobes.
  • Large belt buckles or studded/patterned belts (only plain black belts permitted).

EACH ACADEMY CAN ACCEPT NO LIABILITY FOR THE LOSS OF, OR DAMAGE TO, ANY PERSONAL PROPERTY, INCLUDING JEWELLERY. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO CONFISCATED ITEMS.

ACADEMY SPORTSWEAR

To maintain the quality and standards of the P.E. kit, the items in bold are only available from Uniform Direct.

Boys' and Girls' P.E. kit

Compulsory

  • Sky blue/green reversible capped rugby shirt.
  • Sky blue/green polo shirt with Somercotes logo.
  • Sky blue/green football shorts with Somercotes logo.
  • Sky blue/green sports socks with Somercotes logo.
  • Football boots.
  • Training shoes.
  • Shin pads.
  • Towel.
  • Sports bag or holdall.

Optional

  • Sky blue tracksuit bottoms with Somercotes logo.
  • Swimming costume for showers.

Additional warm clothing/base layers may be worn underneath the Academy kit during very cold weather at the discretion of the member of staff.

FINALLY

Please feel able to contact the Academy BEFORE purchasing any items of uniform if you have any doubts about whether it is acceptable as Academy dress.

POSITIVE REWARD SYSTEM

Our Academy is a good Academy because we insist on high standards of work and behaviour at all times.

We value our students and have a rewards policy in order to recognise their achievements. Teachers will praise you if you do well in class and give you high marks for good classwork or homework.

In addition in Years 7 and 8 you may receive MERITS for:

  • exceptional work
  • outstanding effort
  • very good attendance
  • involvement in extra curricular activities
  • service to the Community.

8 merits = 1 letter
16 merits = Bronze Certificate
32 merits = Silver Certificate
64 merits = Gold Certificate and gift voucher
100 merits = Platinum Certificate and gift voucher
200 merits = Diamond Certificate and gift voucher

These merits should be recorded in your planner.

In Years 9, 10 & 11 – you will work towards acquiring certificates and letters of commendation. These can be included in your National Record of Achievement.

These will include:

  • KS4 Positive Award certificates which result in entry into termly prize draws.
  • Sports/Music/Extra-Curricular Activities certificates.
  • Community Involvement certificates.
  • Presentation Evening nominations.
  • Academy reports.
  • Examination certificates.
  • Lifestyle certificates.

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

Students who fail to meet the Academy's high standards should expect to be punished. This includes where behaviour outside the Academy premises affects the Academy or its staff or students. Punishments vary according to the offence but may include being given:

  • a 'telling off' or warning about future conduct
  • a written task
  • a detention during the Academy day
  • a period of close supervision by means of the daily report procedure or a Pastoral Support Programme.
  • a day or several days in 'isolation'
  • a period of exclusion to be served in the Inclusion Unit (your parents will be notified in writing of this punishment)
  • permanent exclusion.

Permanent Exclusion

Any student engaging in severely inappropriate behaviour will be permanently excluded.

The following are examples of the types of behaviour which have led to permanent exclusion in the past;

  • bringing the Academy into serious disrepute;
  • possession of a dangerous weapon or use of an item as a weapon;
  • behaviour that presents a danger to the welfare of others;
  • possession or use of an illegal substance or alcohol;
  • acts of violence/intimidation/bullying (including cyber bullying)/ harassment/sexual assault (of students or staff);
  • damage to property;
  • theft;
  • arson;
  • persistent disruption to the learning of others;
  • persistent refusal to comply with the discipline procedures of the Academy;
  • deliberately setting off a fire alarm;
  • malicious accusations against staff.

These are only examples and there may be serious incidents not covered above which may also lead to a permanent exclusion at the discretion of the Principal.

Bullying (including racial harassment and equality related incidents)

Bullying of any kind, either in the Academy or out of the Academy, will NOT be tolerated. No-one has the right to make another person unhappy. You should not put up with bullies in your group of friends.

REMEMBER – If you are being bullied or if you see someone else being bullied, report it immediately to a member of staff.

Bullying affects everyone, not just the bullies and the victims. It also affects those other children who watch, and less aggressive students can be drawn in by group pressure. Bullying is not an inevitable part of Academy life or a necessary part of growing up, and it rarely sorts itself out. It is clear that certain jokes, insults, intimidating/threatening behaviour, written abuse and violence are to be found in our society. No one person or group, whether staff or student, should have to accept this type of behaviour. This includes bullying via electronic means both in and out of the Academy. Only when all issues of bullying are addressed, will a student best be able to benefit from the opportunities available at the Academy.

The Academy will not tolerate the act of bullying. It is the responsibility of all (parents, staff - including non-teaching, and students) to report a bullying incident to any member of the teaching staff.

We believe that each student has the right to enjoy her or his learning and social time at the Academy and that this should be free from intimidation of any kind.

Continuous unkind action whether verbal, physical or via electronic device, which is intended to hurt an individual, will be called bullying.

Guidance for Parents

AS A PARENT

a) Look for unusual behaviour in your children. For example, they may suddenly not wish to attend the Academy, feel ill regularly, or not complete work to their normal standard.
b) Always take an active role in your child's education. Enquire how their day has gone, who they have spent their time with, how lunchtime was spent etc.
c) If you feel your child may be a victim of bullying behaviour, inform the Academy IMMEDIATELY. Your complaint will be taken seriously and appropriate action will follow.
d) It is important that you advise your child not to fight back. It can make matters worse!
e) Tell your own son or daughter there is nothing wrong with him or her. It is not his or her fault that they are being bullied.
f) Make sure your child is fully aware of the Academy policy concerning bullying and that they should not be afraid to ask for help.

DRUGS INFORMATION

The Academy identifies 'drugs' as substances which fall into one of the following categories:-

  • legal
  • illegal
  • prescribed
  • over the counter

All students will receive drug education as part of the Citizenship programme within the Academy.

No student should accept any item from another person before, during or after the Academy day, that may be regarded as an inappropriate substance.

Any student found in possession of such substances (unless prescribed by a doctor and permission given for their possession by the Principal, Leadership Team or the Health Assistant) will be dealt with severely by the Academy; in most cases this means permanent exclusion. All such cases will be reported to parents and the Police.

If students see someone in the Academy in possession of one of these substances, or know of someone who is taking one of these substances at the Academy, they must report it immediately to a member of staff.

Students who are required to bring medication into the Academy must complete a medication authorisation form, which is available from the pupil office. Ordinarily, medication is kept with the qualified first aider and administered by a qualified first aider as necessary.

CARE, CONTROL AND RESTRAINT

The purpose of a Care, Control and Restraint Policy and Guidelines is to support the educational and other aims of the Academy and to ensure that the conduct of all members of the Academy community is consistent with the values of the Academy.

Aims:

  • mutual respect – to value others irrespective of age, gender, creed or race;
  • respect for property;
  • care and consideration for others;
  • self respect;
  • self discipline.

The rights implicit aims include:

  • the right to be safe;
  • the right of fair treatment;
  • the right to be treated with respect;
  • the right to be able to learn and teach without unnecessary interruption.

Responsibilities of students include:

  • letting other students get on with their work;
  • sorting out disagreements amicably;
  • ensuring inappropriate items are not brought into the Academy.

Responsibilities of staff include:

  • providing appropriate work;
  • treating all students with respect and fairness.

Physical control may be necessary on some occasions and the Academy reserves the right to use reasonable force when necessary. The degree of force would be the minimum required to control the behaviour and it would be applied in a manner that attempts to reduce rather than provoke aggressive action. Teachers may, for example, physically separate students found fighting, or may physically remove a student who is refusing to leave a room.

Physical restraint is the positive use of force and may be used in order to protect a child from risk, harming others or seriously damaging property. It may also be used when serious disruption prevents others receiving their educational entitlement.

Searching of students

In the first instance staff who suspect students of having inappropriate or banned items should ask the student politely to hand over items that are not allowed in the Academy that they have in their possession.

Students failing to comply will be reported to a senior member of staff who may then request the student to empty their bag, pockets or other places where items may be concealed. This will be carried out by a senior member of staff with another adult present, one of whom will be of the same gender as the student being searched.

Staff may also use electronic scanners to assist in the searching of students.

The Principal reserves the right to authorise a search of pupils or their possessions (including bags) without their consent if there are reasonable grounds for doing so.

Students suspected or found to have illegal substances, offensive weapons or stolen property will be reported to the Police.

If a student refuses to comply with being screened or searched, the student will be subject to severe disciplinary action which could include permanent exclusion.

  • The Academy Behaviour Policy takes full cognisance of the DfE advice regarding screening, searching and confiscation; use of reasonable force, behaviour and discipline in schools.

This document includes the following advice to schools:

Introduction

The role of the Government is to give schools the powers they need to provide a safe and structured environment in which teachers can teach and children can learn.

The Government expects:

  • all pupils to show respect and courtesy towards teachers and other staff and towards each other
  • parents to encourage their children to show that respect and support the school's authority to discipline its pupils
  • head teachers to help to create that culture of respect by supporting their staff's authority to discipline pupils and ensuring that this happens consistently across the school
  • governing bodies and head teachers to deal with allegations against teachers and other school staff quickly, fairly and consistently in a way that protects the pupil and at the same time supports the person who is the subject of the allegation
  • that every teacher will be good at managing and improving children's behaviour.

This advice summarises the legal powers and duties that govern behaviour and attendance in school and explains how they apply to teachers, governing bodies, pupils and parents.

Every school must have a behaviour policy. The governing body is responsible for setting general principles that inform the behaviour policy. The governing body must consult the headteacher, school staff, parents and pupils when developing these principles.

Headteachers are responsible for developing the behaviour policy in the context of this framework. They must decide the standard of behaviour expected of pupils at the school and how that standard will be achieved, the school rules, any disciplinary penalties for breaking the rules and rewards for good behaviour. The behaviour policy must include measures to prevent all forms of bullying among pupils. Headteachers must publicise the school behaviour policy, in writing, to staff, parents and pupils at least once a year.

Powers to discipline (i)

Teachers, teaching assistants and other paid staff with responsibility for pupils have the power to discipline pupils whose behaviour is unacceptable, who break the school rules or who fail to follow a reasonable instruction.

Their power to discipline applies to pupil behaviour in school and outside school, in certain circumstances.

Punishment

Teachers, teaching assistants and other paid staff with responsibility for pupils can impose any reasonable disciplinary penalty in response to poor behaviour. Reasonable penalties can include: confiscation, retention or disposal of a pupil's property; and detention. Headteachers can also decide to exclude a pupil for a fixed period to suspend or to permanently exclude them.

School staff can search pupils with their consent(ii) for any item which is banned by the school rules.

Headteachers and staff authorised by the headteacher have the power to search pupils or their possessions, without consent, where they suspect the pupil has weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs and stolen items.

Searching pupils (iii)

School staff can search pupils with their consent(iv) for any item which is banned by the school rules.

Headteachers and staff authorised by the headteacher have the power to search pupils or their possessions, without consent, where they suspect the pupil has weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs and stolen items.

Use of reasonable force (v)

All school staff have the power to use reasonable force to prevent pupils committing an offence, injuring themselves or others, or damaging property, and to maintain good order and discipline in the classroom.

Allegations of abuse must be taken seriously, but schools should ensure they deal with allegations quickly in a fair and consistent way that provides effective protection for the child and supports the person who is the subject of the allegation. Every effort must be made to maintain confidentiality and guard against unwanted publicity while an allegation is being investigated. Suspension must not be used as an automatic response when an allegation has been reported.

The school's behaviour policy should set out the disciplinary action that will be taken against pupils who are found to have made malicious accusations against school staff.

Exclusion (vi)

The headteacher decides whether to exclude a pupil, for a fixed term or permanently, taking into account all the circumstances, the evidence available and the need to balance the interests of the pupil against those of the whole school community.

Depending on the type of exclusion, in most cases parents have the right to make representations to the governing body (or discipline committee). In all cases of permanent exclusion parents have the additional right to appeal to an independent appeal panel.

Schools are under a duty to provide suitable full-time education for the excluded pupil from the sixth school day of any fixed period exclusion of more than five consecutive school days. Local authorities are under a duty to provide suitable full-time education from the sixth school day of a permanent exclusion.

Schools are required to have, and to ask parents to sign, a Home School Agreement that outlines the responsibilities of the parent and the school; including those around behaviour and attendance.

Parents are under a legal duty to ensure that their child (aged 5-16) receives a suitable full-time education either at a school or by making other suitable arrangements. Where a child is not a registered pupil and other suitable arrangements are not made, the parent may receive a school attendance order from the local authority requiring them to register their child at a school.

For school-registered pupils, parents must ensure that their child attends punctually and regularly. If they do not, the school or local authority may ask them to sign a parenting contract or may issue a £50 penalty. The local authority may also prosecute a parent who fails to ensure their child's regular school attendance or apply to the courts for an education supervision order in respect of the pupil himself/herself.

Parents have a clear role in making sure their child is well behaved at school. If they do not, the school or local authority may ask them to sign a parenting contract or may apply for a court-imposed parenting order.

Parents must take responsibility for their child, if excluded, and ensure that they are not in a public place without good reason during school hours within the first five school days of any exclusion. If they do not, the school or local authority may issue a £50 penalty.

Parents must also ensure that their child attends the suitable full time education provided by the local authority from the sixth day of exclusion. If they do not, the school or local authority may ask them to sign a parenting contract, may issue a £50 penalty or the local authority may prosecute them.

Parents are expected to attend a reintegration interview following any fixed period exclusion from primary school and any fixed period exclusion of more than five days from secondary school. Failure to attend may make it more likely that the court will impose a parenting order if he school or local authority apply for one.
